What Do You Think of Our New Bins?
We have created a short survey to find out what residents think of the new Parks Recycling and Dog Waste Program, we appreciate any feedback that you may have.
Project Details
The City of Delta is piloting a new program that aims to significantly reduce the amount of cross-contamination found in park garbage bins. The Program includes three streams for waste disposals in Delta parks: garbage, mixed containers recycling, and dog waste.
The new multi-stream waste receptacles can be found at the following parks:
Diefenbaker Park
Delview Park
Dugald Morrison Park
Mackie Park
Memorial Park
North Delta Community Park
Winskill Park
This pilot was introduced in September 2022 at seven locations with a total of 14 multi-stream receptacles – two receptacles per park.
Why is This Important?
Diverting waste from the landfill helps reduce greenhouse emissions, ensures recycled materials are repurposed for future uses, and dog waste is diverted to a proper water treatment facility.
A recent waste characterization study was conducted by the Township of Langley, which indicates that 17% of the materials disposed of at parks are recyclable and 63% are dog waste. The need to establish a separate stream for dog waste is further emphasized by Metro Vancouver’s Disposal Ban Program, which requires that no more than 5% of waste taken to the landfill contain pet excrement.
