Project Update – November 2023:

Thank you to all who participated in the community engagement this summer. Based on the feedback we received, the desired option is Design Concept: Option 2, Proposed Enclosed Off-Leash Dog Area and Barrier Fence Adjacent to Parking Lot. We received 91 responses on the survey and the survey results indicated that 67% of residents noted a preference for Design Concept: Option 2.

We have incorporated feedback from the community engagement into our detailed design where possible. Please see below for a sneak peek of the revised Concept Plan*. This plan is currently under review by FortisBC and we are waiting on final approval before we can finalize the construction details and break ground.

Installation Timeline: Starting January 2024, pending approval from FortisBC

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2024

Project Background:

In Summer 2023, the City of Delta invited residents to provide feedback regarding proposed enhancements to the existing off-leash dog area at North Delta Community Park.

The main objective of this project is to improve the safety of the off-leash dog area by implementing a barrier fence between the existing off-leash dog area (north of the North Delta Recreation Centre) and the adjacent parking lot. The barrier fence is proposed to be a minimum of 1.2 meters high.

During community engagement in Summer 2023, we proposed two design concepts for the community to provide feedback on. Please see the proposed plans and their descriptions below:

Design Concept: Option 1

Proposed Barrier Fence Adjacent to Parking Lot

This option includes barrier fencing between the existing off-leash dog area and adjacent parking lot/access road behind North Delta Recreation Centre. The barrier fence has openings at the entry points (there are no gated entries). The design concept also features new seating, shade trees, waste bins, and signage that denotes the extent of the off-leash dog area.

Design Concept: Option 2

Proposed Enclosed Off-Leash Dog Area and Barrier Fence Adjacent to Parking Lot

This option features a fully enclosed off-leash dog area on the east side of the existing off-leash dog area. It also includes barrier fencing between the existing off-leash dog area and adjacent parking lot.

The proposed enclosure has two access points with gated entries, and several options for surfacing. A new path is located outside of the enclosure, along the perimeter of the north and east sides of the enclosure. This new path connects to the main park path, so park users do not have to walk through the gated enclosure.

The design concept also features new seating, shade trees, waste bins, and signage that denotes the extent of the off-leash dog area.
