Why was a section of the Holly Park bike park removed? Who made that decision?

A portion of the bike park in Holly Park was removed due to park boundary realignment in 2024 to allow for a sport field expansion in the future. City Council supported this direction as part of the development process for the new townhouse complex project adjacent to Holly Park.

What is happening with the existing Holly Park Pump Track?

As a result of a realigned park boundary, a portion of the Holly Park Pump Track has been removed. The existing bike park will remain open for the time being, but material from the existing site may be reused in the construction of a new bike facility. The City will aim to minimize any closure period

Why choose Kensington Park North? Why not keep the bike park at Holly Park? Have other locations been considered?

    • Kensington Park North has been identified as the best location for the bike park, offering a space that can meet or exceed the size and quality of the existing track. Located half a kilometre from Holly Park, it includes an existing parking lot and is set back from nearby homes—minimizing the impacts to neighbours.
    • The long-term plan for Holly Park is to allow for the future development of an additional sports field

Could we add future amenities or expand the park later?

Yes, the proposed footprint allows for future growth, if there is user demand and funding. Final approval from BC Hydro will be required.

How will the BC Hydro Powerlines affect the design?

As Kensington Park North sits within a BC Hydro Right of Way, permits will be required for the development of the site. The bike park design must adhere to BC Hydro’s safety and clearance criteria for setbacks and height limitations.

Will the new bike park be maintained by volunteers or City Staff?

The new bike park will be maintained by City Staff.

When will the new bike park be built?

The final design concept and construction budget will be brought to Council for a decision this fall. If approved, the City will move forward with the BC Hydro permit process and will invite competitive bids to develop detailed designs and construct the track. Pending BC Hydro approval, we are aiming for construction in spring 2026

What is the budget for this project and where did the funding come from?

The proposal includes a budget of $500,000 in the City’s 2025 Financial Plan for design and construction. Funding of $500k was provided through a voluntary amenity contribution by the developer of the townhouse complex project.
