Farm Buildings on Agricultural Land

We Want to Hear From Delta Farmers!

Delta is exploring new options to guide the approval of farm buildings* on agricultural land in addition to the current City building permit process and provincial requirements.

We want to make sure our approach stays current, clear, and consistent for everyone. Updating our practices will help support farmers’ evolving needs while protecting farmland for future generations.

If you farm in Delta, please fill out this short form to let us know what you think. The form should take about 5-10 minutes to complete. We’ll be collecting feedback until June 9, 2025.

*Farm buildings include all non-residential structures on agricultural land as permitted under the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) Act

Section 1: About Your Property

We’d like to learn a little more about the people filling out this form to make sure we’re hearing from farmers across our whole community.

1.

Do you own or lease your agricultural property(ies)?

2.

Where is your agricultural property(ies) located? (Select all that apply.)

3.

Is the agricultural property(ies) assessed as a “farm” through BC Assessment (e.g. maintains Farm Class)

4.

What is the total area or size of the agricultural land you own and/or farm?

5.

What types of agricultural activities take place on the agricultural property(ies) you own and/or farm? (Select all that apply.)

Section 2: Regulating Farm Buildings

We’d like to understand how concerned the farming community is about several areas where the City could consider updating its practices for reviewing farm building applications. This includes aspects such as building use, size, appearance, location, and potential impacts. The goal is to ensure farm buildings continue to support farming and help protect farmland.

6.

Building Use  - How concerned are you about the use of farm buildings? (e.g. ensuring farm buildings are used for farm activities permitted in the Agricultural Land Reserve)

8.

Building Size - How concerned are you about the size of farm buildings? (e.g. ensuring size is appropriate for the needs of the farming operation and does not take up more farmland than necessary)

10.

Building Appearance - How concerned are you about the appearance of farm buildings? (e.g. appearance is appropriate for the intended farm use)

12.

Building Location – How concerned are you about where farm buildings are located on the site? (e.g. ensuring the location is on non-farmable area and clustered with other buildings)

14.

Building Impacts – How concerned are you about the possible impacts of the construction and/or operation of farm buildings? (e.g. ensuring consideration of potential increases in noise, traffic and land costs, and impacts to soil condition)
