72 Avenue Roadway Improvements (BNSF Overpass to 120 Street)

In February 2020, the City of Delta held its third public information meeting for the 72 Avenue Roadway Improvements Project. Following the consultation process, detailed designs were completed and in September 2021 Delta awarded the first phase construction contract to Arsalan Construction Ltd. from the BNSF Overpass to 115 Street.

Construction Phasing:

  • Phase 1 (BNSF Overpass to 115 Street) - 2021/2022
  • Phase 2 (115 Street to 120 Street) - 2023

The proposed improvements along 72 Avenue include:

  • Road widening to accommodate 4 travel lanes, centre median island, grass boulevards with street trees, and new decorative LED street lighting on 72 Avenue;
  • New dual southbound right turn at 112 Street;
  • Bus stop improvements;
  • New traffic signals at Westview Drive and 113 Street;
  • Sidewalk improvements and new multi-use pathway between Westview Drive and York Crescent;
  • Safety improvements including speed radar signs and pedestrian fencing at key locations;
  • Roadside swales for drainage and two rain gardens at Westview Drive and Heath Elementary; and,
  • Roadway repaving.

Construction Updates/Schedule:

The City of Delta has completed all paving and concrete works along 72 Avenue including the commissioning of the new traffic signals including the designated signalised U-turn at Westview Drive. The commissioning of the 112 Street traffic signals are scheduled to be completed the week of November 14 including the installation of new street lighting along 72 Avenue between Westview Drive and 115 Street. Boulevard landscaping including rain garden planting is nearing completion and street trees are scheduled to be installed in early Spring 2023.

During the commissioning of the 112 Street traffic signals which is scheduled to be completed on November 16. The hours of work will be from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and a traffic management plan will be in place to maintain traffic flow in all directions. Please use caution while travelling in this area and obey road/construction signs, posted speed limits, and traffic control personnel. Single-lane traffic in each direction will be maintained.

At this time it is anticipated that the project will be substantially complete by November 2022.

Traffic Impacts:

During the 112 Street traffic signal commissioning works, please use caution while travelling in this area and obey road/construction signs, posted speed limits, and traffic control personnel. We will make every effort to minimize the inconvenience to residents; however, with work of this nature, some inconvenience will be unavoidable and we ask for your patience and cooperation during construction.

Construction Night Work:

To minimize traffic disruption, work that will have major traffic impacts such as major asphalt paving is planned to be undertaken in the late evenings and overnight when traffic is generally minimal. Prior to any construction work at night, a notice will be provided to residents in the immediate area to advise of upcoming construction work and schedule. All efforts will be made to have minimal noise generated during the night work.

This project is co-funded by TransLink as part of their Major Road Network Improvement Program and is also co-funded by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).
