City of Delta Breaks Ground on Site of Winskill Renewal Project
On Tuesday, July 8, the City of Delta marked another significant milestone by breaking ground on the site of the new Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre. With shovels in hand, Delta Council and members of the project team officially announced the start of construction on the much-anticipated Winskill Renewal Project.
“The start of construction on the new Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre is a major milestone that I’m incredibly proud to celebrate,” said Mayor George V. Harvie. “There has been plenty of behind-the-scenes efforts to get us to this point, and with work beginning on site by the end of the month, I’m looking forward to seeing the vision for what is bound to be an outstanding community asset.”
Crews are set to begin work in late July with the removal of topsoil to prepare the site for vehicles and equipment. A temporary construction access point with traffic control systems will also be in place along 56 Street at this time, which will last for the duration of the project. After site mobilization, a main storm drainage line adjacent to the worksite will be upgraded prior to beginning work on the building foundations.
The current Winskill Aquatic & Fitness Centre will remain open to the public for programs and activities during most of the construction period, except for the closure of the U13 baseball diamond #2 on July 16. Facility users will still be able to access the parking lot at the current facility, with additional parking available by the Winskill Park Lawn Bowling Fieldhouse
Pre-design work for the new facility started in January 2024, with Delta staff embarking on a thorough consultation and design process. This past spring alone saw 649 residents participate in the final phase of the engagement process, the feedback from which influenced the final designs. This work culminated in the formal adoption of the layout plans by Delta Council on May 5, 2025, which also confirmed the timeline for the next phases of the project.
