Background Information
Vision Zero is a long-term global movement aimed to eliminate all traffic related fatalities and severe injuries by making communities safer for all modes of transportation and to encourage mobility for all.
The concept of Vision Zero originated from Sweden and its achievements are being recognized worldwide, particularly gaining momentum in North America. It has been embraced at both the federal and provincial levels in Canada and a number of cities such as Vancouver, Surrey, and Toronto have adopted their own Vision Zero strategies in recent years.
The Safe Systems Approach
City of Delta and Vision Zero
In 2020, Council supported the development of a Vision Zero Strategy for the City of Delta. The following priorities have been identified as guiding principles for the Vision Zero Strategy:
Reduce fatalities and serious collisions
Improve connections to schools and community services
Address needs for older adults and vulnerable road users
Survival rates in relation to speed
Given that road safety is a shared responsibility, Delta would like to develop a holistic and strategic road safety plan including all the different stakeholders and community partners. As such, Delta wants to undertake community outreach and engagement.
The goal of the outreach is to inform, educate and obtain community buy-in to this important initiative. Public and stakeholder engagement will also help shape the policy direction and actions within the plan.
