Consultation has concluded
Background Information
Vision Zero is an international traffic safety initiative that aims to achieve a road system with no fatalities or serious injuries. It originated in Sweden and has been embraced by a number of cities in North America in recent years.
In 2020, Council supported the development of a Vision Zero Strategy for City of Delta.
At the September 9, 2024 Regular Meeting, Delta Council unanimously endorsed the Delta’s Vision Zero Strategy.
Delta's Vision Zero Strategy
The Delta's Vision Zero Strategy provides a course of proactive approaches to:
Enhance road safety and accessibility
Reduce traffic related fatalities and serious injuries
Foster a culture of shared responsibility for road safety
The strategy is built on a Safe Systems Approach, which layers multiple forms of protection for road users, fostering a culture of shared responsibility and embracing the right to safe mobility for everyone.
Safe System Approach
The development of the Strategy was based on collision data analysis, public and stakeholder feedback as well as technical assessment of various road safety initiatives. Public feedback was received through two rounds of public engagement sessions and online surveys.
Objective
The Delta's Vision Zero Strategy aims to reduce serious injuries and fatalities by at least 5% annually, with a target of a 25% reduction by 2030. To achieve this, Delta has approved a three-phase implementation plan that includes a wide range of safety measures.
Implementation Plan
Moving forward, Delta’s Engineering staff will collaborate with community stakeholders and other agencies such as Delta Police, ICBC, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, about how the City can successfully implement the Vision Zero strategy to save lives, prevent injuries, and prioritize public safety.
