Sunbury Park Playground: Project Update – Consultation Results

Thank you to all who participated in phases one and two of the community engagement for Sunbury Park Playground Renewal. We sent letters to 273 residents, posted signage and social media notices, held two open houses and provided a feedback form at letstalk.delta.ca. We received feedback from 128 participants.

Based on the feedback we received from 128 participants, the desired playground design option is Playground Option 1 that was favored by 88 participants. Additional comments included a strong preference for basket swings, retaining the existing fence and gate, upgrades to the seating area at the playground and for the existing half basketball court to be improved.

Playground Features:

• Unique climbing structure for ages 2-12

• Two tall slides and a junior slide

• Climbing net and monkey bars for ages 5-12

• Twin rider seesaw for ages 2-5

• Inclusive play panels and musical element

• Swings: two bucket seats, two inclusive basket swings and two belt seats

• Inclusive merry-go-round

• Engineered wood fiber playground surfacing to meet CSA fall safety requirements

• Existing playground fence and gate will remain

• Existing playground seating area will be upgraded with new surfacing and benches

Installation Timeline:

Starting: Fall 2024

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2025

Phase 2 Community Engagement: Design Update

The City of Delta invites you to participate in Phase 2 of the community engagement for the Sunbury Park playground replacement. The current playground will be replaced in 2024.

In Phase 1, we gathered community feedback on the new playground through an online form, see below for a summary of What We Learned. This feedback guided our playground designs.

For Phase 2, we present two playground design options for residents to provide feedback. We would like to know which playground design you think will work best at Sunbury Park. Please fill out the feedback form (at bottom of this page) to let us know your thoughts.

The feedback form will be available on this website between June 1, 2024 and June 17, 2024

You can also meet us in-person at the Sunbury Park Playground on the following days:

• Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm

• Thursday, June 6, 2024 from 3:30pm to 6:00pm

See below for the proposed playground options and features.

Phase 1 Community Engagement: What We Learned – Public Feedback Form Summary

In Winter 2024 (January 26 – March 4, 2024) we invited the community to participate in Phase 1 of the community engagement for the Sunbury Park playground replacement. The purpose of this community engagement was to evaluate the needs of the community for the new playground at Sunbury Park.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the community engagement. We sent letters to 273 residents, posted signage and provided a feedback form at letstalk.delta.ca. We received feedback from 184 participants.

Out of the 184 participants, 105 of them live 1.5 blocks away from the park. 82% of the participants walk to the park. 60% of respondents visit the park 1-2x a week.

The existing playground is favoured by the participants due to the existing shade trees, fencing, location, swings and play equipment for ages 4 and under.

The main themes we heard from participants through the feedback form are the need for an accessible and inclusive playground for a range of ages and abilities.

In the feedback form we asked participants their top 5 favourite types of playground equipment in general, they are:

  1. Swings
  2. Climbing Structure
  3. Slides
  4. Merry-go-round/Roundabout
  5. Climbing Nets

Background:

The existing playground at Sunbury Park is at the end of its lifespan and will be replaced in 2024.

Our goal is to install the new playground in Fall 2024.

If you have questions about the project or would like to discuss your thoughts and feedback with us, you can find our contact information on this page.
