Sports Field and Ball Diamond Needs Review
Phase 2 Engagement (Completed - Spring 2025)
Delta supports 64 outdoor sports groups across 116 fields for activities like soccer, baseball, rugby, and cricket. With a 24% population increase expected by 2035, the City conducted a Sports Field Needs Assessment to plan for future demand. The assessment reviewed current use, identified ways to improve access and efficiency, and guided future upgrades. Input from 31 user groups over two phases of engagement informed the assessment. The final report was presented to Council at the July 28 Regular Council Meeting and can be reviewed here.
Key Findings
Through the assessment, it was determined that the City has an adequate supply of fields to meet anticipated demand over the next 10 years once key projects currently under construction are completed. As well, Delta residents enjoy more synthetic turf, natural turf, and ball diamonds per resident than comparable and nearby municipalities. Looking ahead, the City will focus on managing use effectively by regularly updating fees and allocation policies, along with making targeted upgrades that enhance user experience and improve flexibility.
Upcoming Engagement Opportunities
There are two key initiatives that the community will have the opportunity to provide their feedback on in the fall:
John Oliver Park was identified in the Sports Field Needs Assessment as a prime location for a centralized athletic and tournament hub. Three example layouts for the site have been created to support further discussion with the community.
A new Parks, Recreation & Culture Master Plan is being developed to ensure that our parks, facilities, programs, and services continue to meet the needs of the community now and for the next 25 years. Residents will be asked to share input on the vision and priorities.
