An Exciting New Inclusive Playground is Coming!
The City of Delta in partnership with REACH Child and Youth Development Society is expanding the outdoor playground at the North Delta Recreation Centre to make it more fun and accessible for everyone.
The new playground will include:
An expanded play area with more space to explore and play
Exciting new features like an in-ground trampoline, seesaw, and a play boat
Wheelchair-accessible play equipment designed for inclusive, multi-sensory play
Rubber surfacing throughout for safer and easier access
Shade trees, picnic tables, and benches to provide comfort for adults, families, and caregivers
Fencing throughout for added safety
A track to accommodate rolling toys, trikes and wheelchairs
The project is the result of a longtime partnership between the City of Delta and the REACH Child and Youth Development Society and is funded in part by grants from the Province of British Columbia and Tire Stewardship BC. The project is expected to cost $400,000, the majority of which is funded by the Province of British Columbia’s Community Gaming Grant Program ($201,372), money raised by REACH and donated by the Tasty Indian Bistro and the BC Aboriginal Society ($68,000), and a BC Tire Stewardship Grant ($21,420). In addition to providing the space and construction management, the City of Delta also contributed $150,000.
Construction is set to begin in late July, with completion scheduled for fall 2025. The existing playground will remain open as much as possible during construction, though there will be temporary closures at times to ensure user safety.
Overall Playground Plan:
Community Engagement: What We Learned - Public Feedback Form Summary
Thank you to everyone who participated in our community engagement in Spring 2024 regarding the playground expansion project and the North Delta Recreation Centre. We sent letters to 431 residents, posted signage, posted on social media and provided a feedback form at letstalk.delta.ca We received feedback from 113 participants.
In the feedback form we asked participants if they felt that the existing playground is in need of expansion - participants were very supportive of the expansion as 92% of respondents felt that the expansion is needed.
The main themes we heard from participants through the feedback form are:
Fenced Enclosure: Maintain the fence for safety, especially for toddlers and young children.
Shade: Need for more shade structures (e.g., shade sails).
Surfacing: Participants appreciate the soft rubberized surface.
Accessibility: Strong desire for more inclusive features for children with special needs.
Equipment for Various Age Groups: Many requests for more play structures for older children and to add swings, zip lines, and climbing structures. Respondents appreciate the existing equipment for its inclusivity and various play options.
Seating: More benches and seating areas for caregivers.
Background:
The City of Delta plans to expand the existing outdoor playground at the North Delta Recreation Centre. The project is in partnership with the Reach Child and Youth Development Society.
The goals of the project are to increase capacity and enhance accessibility. The City is proposing to:
double the play area's size
add fencing, seating, and shade trees
include wheelchair-accessible play equipment that allows users to engage with various senses and physical capabilities on a safe and accessible surface
See map below for location of the existing playground and the extent of the proposed playground expansion.
