What's Happening Now

The City of Delta is excited to launch Phase 2 of community engagement for the Ladner Harbour Playground Renewal Project. The existing playground is nearing the end of its life and is scheduled for replacement in 2026.

In Phase 1, we gathered community feedback on the new playground through an online feedback form. You can see a summary of that feedback and what we heard below. This input guided our playground designs. Many participants highlighted the importance of improving accessibility and creating a more inclusive playground which offers engaging play opportunities for multiple age groups. Based on this feedback, we’ve created two playground design options to better serve park users.

📋What We Learned - Phase 1 Community Engagement

Thank you to everyone who participated in our community engagement regarding the Playground Renewal Project at Ladner Harbour Park. For Phase 1 of the engagement, we posted 2 large signs at the park and provided a feedback form at letstalk.delta.ca. We had 128 people provide their feedback on the project.

Of the 128 participants, 81% of people lived further than 500m from the playground, with 59% of people driving to the playground and 38% walking there. 34% of participants visit the park 1-2 times a month, and 27% only visit during the summer or during nice weather.

Ladner Harbour Park playground is appreciated for its location and natural setting, the available seating and gathering spaces, and its multiple swings and slides. Many participants have indicated support for a playground that has play structures suitable for children younger than 5 years old as well as more challenging, risky play features for 5–12-year-olds.

We asked participants what their favorite types of playground equipment are. The top five are:

  1. Swings
  2. Climbing structure
  3. Slides
  4. Merry go-round
  5. Monkey bars

When asked about their favorite ways to play, participants chose swinging, sliding, climbing, social play and spinning.

Key themes we heard

Location & Safety

  • Protect the natural spaces and maintain the grass area for gathering
  • Consider creating a “destination playground” as most families need to drive to the site
  • Concerns about the number of off-leash dogs at the current site

Playground Features

  • Consider natural playground elements to fit the site aesthetic
  • Maintain the number of swings, and include accessible swing seat
  • Playground elements for children of all ages so the whole family can play
  • Support for risky play and playground accessibility for all

Accessibility & Inclusion

  • The site and playground elements should be accessible for mobility devices
  • Seating areas should be accessible for mobility devices
  • Create level entry points to access playground

Ground Material

  • Use a different ground material as there is currently a problem with wasps creating nests in the playground sand

Seating & Gathering

  • Improve and increase the seating opportunities around the playground for family gathering
  • Create shaded areas

Additional Amenities

  • Water fountain
  • Gazebo structure or covered area
  • Improved BBQ pits

Staff will incorporate feedback to help inform the design phase of the new playground.

Phase 2 of community engagement will begin in spring of 2026.
