Dunlin murmuration at Brunswick Point
This flock of dunlin, a sandpiper species, is inspiring for two reasons. First, these little birds travel vast distances from their wintering grounds in Delta to the high arctic where they breed. Second, these diminutive birds individually represent an easy target for falcons and other predators. However, by forming a murmuration of hundreds of birds they form a massive shape that moves continuously and makes it harder for the raptors to pick out single birds. Delta is an important location on the Pacific Flyway and our environment is vital for migratory birds that rest and refuel here. Name: Simon Shutter Category: Adult
