On February 1, U.S. President Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian imports and a 10% levy on Canadian energy, effective 12:01 am EST on Tuesday, February 4. In response, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that Canada will impose a 25% tariff on $30 billion worth of American goods starting the same day, followed by an additional $125 billion on American products in 21 days. Since then, the tariffs have been delayed for 30 days to allow for further discussions.

These new tariffs create significant uncertainty. They will raise costs for everyone—individuals, families, and businesses alike. Local Delta businesses across manufacturing, transportation, distribution, and retail will be hit hard. As will other sectors. They will face increased costs, reduced demand, disruptions to supply chains, and the effects of a weaker Canadian dollar.

In these challenging times, it is vital that Delta, and all of Canada, stand united. We recognize that the impact of these tariffs will extend beyond businesses. Rising prices, job losses, and strained cross-border relationships will affect us all. It is more important than ever that we support each other. Local businesses are the backbone of our economy, and by choosing to shop Canadian and local, Delta residents can play a crucial role in sustaining our economy and supporting our community.

With support from the City of Delta, the Delta Chamber of Commerce is launching a survey for local businesses, seeking to better understand the potential impacts of the proposed tariffs on our economy. Businesses are encouraged to take part and share how they expect to be affected, both in the short and long term. The deadline for the survey is end of day February 17.
