This project has been successfully completed.

Background

Based on analyses and studies carried out by the Provincial Government, Delta’s dike system must be raised to protect from flood risks projected in the future. The dike crest elevation must be raised to 4.1 metres to accommodate sea level rise up to the year 2050. The dike will need to be raised further to 4.7 metres to protect from anticipated additional sea level rise by 2100. Delta intends to complete the dike raising work in a phased approach, based on the availability of funding to reach the 2100 target.

About the Project

This project is the first phase in Delta’s long-term plan to raise all dikes in the community.

A 200-metre section of the dike, south of the Boundary Bay Airport has been selected for this phase. The section will be raised using a 2-levelled approach as shown in Figure 1. The existing dike will be raised to 4.1 metres. A 100-metre section in the center will be further raised to 4.7 metres. The dike will then be sloped back to the existing dike crest elevation symmetrically at both ends.

As shown in Figure 2, the dike will also be widened on the landward side, to accommodate the increased height. This is essential to preserving the valuable salt marsh habitat on the Boundary Bay Foreshore.

Impact to Residents

The Boundary Bay dike path will be closed from March 4 to April 30, 2024. Residents should anticipate increased truck activity along Ladner Trunk Road, 72nd Street, and 88th Street during construction hours, 7:00am to 7:00pm Monday to Friday, and 9:00am to 5:00pm Saturdays.
