Preliminary works for the 56 Street Multi-Use Pathway are scheduled to begin in late May 2025, with construction anticipated to follow in the summer. The new pathway will be located along 56 Street between 6 Avenue and Winskill Park.
These works will include tree removals along the construction area which is necessary to allow for the installation of the new multi-use pathway. A reforestation plan is in place and will be carried out once construction has been completed. In total, 71 trees are being removed and those that are viable will be relocated. In accordance with the City's tree protection bylaw, approximately 200 trees will be replanted across Delta to replace the removed trees.
During the preliminary works, the northbound traffic on 56 Street between 6 Avenue and 8A Avenue will be reduced to a single-lane from 7:00 am – 7:00 pm.
Project Background:
A Public Information Meeting with City staff was held on September 25, 2024, to discuss the proposed design with the community. The proposed improvements include a 3.5m wide asphaltmulti-use pathway, grassed boulevard, street trees and LED street lighting along the east side of 56 Street between 6 Avenue and 8A Avenue, as well as new signage along 8A Avenue and 55A Street to provide connection to Winskill Park through the existing travel lanes. Please see the presentation drawing for more information.
The project is part of Delta’s annual Cycling Infrastructure program to increase safety and accessibility for cyclist and pedestrian in the community. The cycling improvements along this route are identified in Delta’s Cycling Master Plan. For more information regarding Delta's current cycling routes, please refer to the Delta Routes Map.
